What is Blood Pressure?

a cut-away of the heart and an artery

What is blood pressure? Besides what the nurse take every time you go to the doctors office. You might be like I was and only know that, it is the measurement of your blood pressure (????) and the bottom number is that one that will kills ya. Maybe you know more or less than me. But, if you are curious, just sit back and let us see what we can find.

When the nurse takes our blood pressure it is composted of two numbers. 120/80 is the normal measurement for blood pressure. Each of these numbers represent the pressure our blood is placing on our blood vessels walls.

With the help of webword, I was able to hear, how to pronounce, the pressures that are measured. (I know at 57 it seems like I should know more about blood pressure but, there was never the need till now.)

The top number or higher number, is called the systolic pressure. The systolic pressure is the pressure that our blood is when our hearts are actually contracting (the left ventricle). The lower number, is called the diatolic pressure. It is the blood pressure after the contraction of the heart, while the chambers are refilling with blood.

Why is Blood Pressure Important?

That is all fine and dandy, but why should I care? Why is blood pressure one of the most critical measurement, that we or our doctors can monitor.

When our blood pressure is normal, chances are that our hearts are doing its job, without putting to much pressure on our blood vessels. Now, if our blood pressure is low, our hearts have to work harder to pump blood though out our bodies. One of the signs of low blood pressure is being tired and sluggish, our bodies will be lacking oxygen and nutrients.

With high blood pressure our heart are still working to hard. With the increase in pressure, the blood puts to much pressure on the blood vessel wall. And over the years, we have leaned, that when you over work a part of our body, it protects itself, by building callouses. Believe it or not, the blood vessels do the same thing as our hand and feet. They just call it atherosclerosis.

shows what Atherosclerosis does

Atherosclerosis simply means hardening of the arteries. This make our arteries weaker because they can not stretch and contract when blood is being pumped through them. One of the side effect of atherosclerosis are that cholesterol, can get deposited more easily in harden arteries. Causing higher blood pressure.

All of this sets you up to have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. It can also lead to kidney failure, loss of eyesight, and chest pain. If you have diabetes, this risk becomes even greater and you could be in real trouble.

High blood pressure can also make you feel light headed and make you feel increased stress. But, the good news is, that understanding what blood pressure is, can help you to take control of it and improve your health significantly.
